EL PLA D’URGELL

The Pla d’Urgell County is located in Catalonia, Spain, on the left side of the Segre River. In the north, Pla d’Urgell borders with La Nogural; in the south with Les Garrigues; in the east with L’Urgell; and in the west with Segrià.

Due to its strategic

position, Pla d’Urgell County has become a highly important thoroughfare which has brought along a privileged net of roads. The N-II has been the main connecting road for a long time, and is one of the busiest and used highways in Spain.

The construction of the N-II highway in 1992 has provided faster and better vehicle flow to the cities and towns in the area. In addition, this highway has joined commercial and economical centres and some of the most important towns and cities, not only in Catalonia, but also in the rest of Spain.

Another very important road is l’Eix Transversal, which links Pla d’Urgell with important cities like Manresa, Vic, and Girona.

The County’s communication network, roads, trains, and buses are very efficient. Local roads connect different towns within the county; most of those roads converge in Mollerussa, the capital of Plad’Urgell. The interior train line from Lleida to Barcelona, through Maresa, has several stations, in Bell-lloc d’Urgell, Mollerussa, Golmés, and Castellnou de Seana. There is also a net of bus lines that links every town in the County with Lleida and Barcelona with several daily trips.

VILA-SANA

Vila-Sana is a small town located in the centre of Pla d’Urgell County. Its main commercial activity is agriculture with predominance of crops such as corn, alfalfa, and fruit trees. Vila-Sana’s tranquillity and peace are the main assets that this small town can offer. Only 1 km (1/2 a mile) away,

there is ‘L’estany d’Ivars-Vila-Sana’, a natural pond that was recovered after it was dried out several decades ago. Only 4 km (2.5 miles) away there is the city of Mollerussa that includes services as any big city.

Furthermore, Vila-Sana has other attractions, both natural and cultural. There is a green area where families get together for BBQ’s; in this green area there is an ancient magnificent banana tree which was declared a National Heritage. Several swimming pools are located next to this green area, where children and adults spend the hot summers.

During the year, the town has several celebrations or “Fiestas”. In the winter there is the carnival that is celebrated with a popular dinner based on lean pig meat such as longaniza (sausage) and dry white beans. At the end of April, the ‘De la Cabeza’ virgin is honoured with devotion by the local people. The second weekend in May Saint Michael is celebrated with two events: a big Fiesta where the main attraction is a traditional stew based on snail, spinach, potatoes, and sausage called ‘Festa de les Cassoles’ and a bicycle outing with a nice breakfast afterwards in the green area under the huge banana trees. The last weekend in September, the main Festival called ‘Fiesta Mayor’ is celebrated to honour Saint Michael, the patron saint of Vila-Sana.
